Rat Silo is a band that thrives on defying musical boundaries, seamlessly blending elements of post-rock, punk, and an eclectic mix of other genres to create a sound that is both raw and innovative. Founded in 2007 by Jim Newton, former member of the Canadian rock band Sons of Freedom, Rat Silo brings together a group of seasoned musicians who each contribute their unique talents and musical experiences. The band features Don Binns on bass, Sean Stubbs on drums, Finn Manniche on guitar, and Dave Osbourne on keyboards, all of whom have notable backgrounds in various rock and alternative bands. Their debut album, What the Butler Saw, recorded during an intense three-day session, was expertly produced by Mark Henning, setting the stage for Rat Silo’s bold entrance into the music world. This was followed by the release of doubleplusungood in 2009, recorded with Rob Handel and mixed by Henning, further establishing the band’s reputation for crafting genre-bending sounds that resonated with critics and fans alike. In 2011, their third album, The Great Northern Way, mixed by the accomplished Dave Ogilvie, marked a new phase in the band’s career, demonstrating their ever-evolving sound and ability to captivate audiences. The addition of Vancouver-based percussionist and electronic DJ Erkan Gencol in 2017 infused their music with mesmerizing loops and electronic textures, enhancing their experimental edge. Rat Silo’s recent output includes the 2022 album The World Is Going To End Tomorrow and its 2023 follow-up Unfortunately…, both recorded by Dave Ogilvie, Liam Moes, and Mike Foster, and mixed by Anthony Valcic. These albums, along with the singles “I Sacrifice,” “The World Is Going To End Tomorrow,” and “Head On A Stick,” highlight the band’s continuous innovation and boundary-pushing artistry. With a combination of electronically enhanced acoustic instruments, a post-rock ethos, and a punk attitude, Rat Silo offers a unique and immersive experience that challenges conventional genre labels and captivates listeners with their unpredictable yet powerful sound.
